I bought the Starter first planning to play with 3 players. The Starter box is a barebones starting point and the adventure is designed for 5 adventurers. Going through the directions and researching online, I realized that there were many things missing from that set that would be helpful.
This Essentials set makes up for everything that feels shorted in the Starter. You get full instructions for character creation, a full sized map of the area & town, side kick characters for 2 players, a DM Screen that is very helpful for the DM running the adventure. You also get some extra dice and tons of cards to represent items and quests in the game.
Thankfully both the Starter and the Essential set take place in the same place, so everything in this Essentials set can be combined or reused in that adventure. One thing to note is that some reviews claim that the DM Screen is paper thin, but mine was actually cardboard. It is not thick cardboard, but it holds itself up fine.

The dice are nice, and I’m a fan of the 4d6 and 2d20. The DM screen is just cardstock but it works fine,with all the usual stuff printed on it. Haven’t run the adventure yet but honestly it seems like a better one for new players than the one you get with the Starter Kit. And you should have enough with just this box to start playing immediately.

This is a great buy. Not only do you get a rule booklet, a campaign booklet, a map, and some dice, you also get a really beautiful DM screen and tons of game cards for spells, abilities, and initiative. This is a great way to get back into D&D if you haven’t played since 3.5 (like me) or if you’re introducing new players to the game. It’s an amazing value for everything you get. Best bang for your buck purchase I’ve seen in a long-ass time.
